Rethinking how marketing is measured
AI isn’t just changing how people discover brands. It’s changing how marketers understand what happens next.
As customer journeys become more fragmented and AI search disrupts traditional click behaviour, attribution models built around a linear funnel are beginning to show their age. And while impressions, clicks and website visits fluctuate, one thing hasn’t changed: businesses still need marketing to generate revenue.
"The future of attribution isn't about chasing perfect data. It's about connecting marketing, CRM and commercial insight to understand what drives growth. As AI reshapes customer journeys, better analytics and ROI measurement will help businesses invest with greater confidence."
– Liam, Strategy Director
The traditional marketing funnel is no more
The traditional funnel used to look something like this:
Awareness > Consideration > Conversion
Today, the route is less clear-cut. A customer might start by asking ChatGPT for recommendations, then watch a LinkedIn video. Next, they’ll visit the website… without converting, only to return via a branded search weeks later and finally convert after seeing an email or paid social campaign.
No single channel owns the journey. The modern customer experience is connected, even if the reporting isn't.

Beyond the click
One of the biggest shifts driven by AI is the decline in measurable interactions. Customers are increasingly getting the answers they need before they ever set eyes on a brand’s website, resulting in a “zero-click search.” So, while demand may still be there, metrics such as website sessions, organic clicks, search impressions and CTR may no longer provide the full picture.
That doesn’t mean marketing is becoming less effective. It means buying behaviour is evolving, and the way we measure it needs to evolve too.
So rather than asking, “Why is traffic down?”, the better question is: “Are we driving more valuable outcomes?”

"As AI Overviews and platforms like ChatGPT become part of everyday research, businesses need to focus less on chasing every click and more on building accurate tracking, stronger first-party data and better digital experiences. Better measurement leads to better optimisation and ultimately better conversion."
– Junjie, Digital Marketing Strategist
Attribution is now a business-wide question
Modern attribution isn’t about proving which advert generated a click. It’s about understanding how marketing investment influences commercial performance.
That calls for a broader view, bringing CRM data, website analytics, advertising platforms, marketing automation, sales outcomes and revenue reporting into the same conversation. The more closely those datasets work together, the easier it becomes to link marketing activity with commercial impact.
Perfect attribution doesn’t exist. Privacy changes, cookie restrictions and AI-powered discovery will always leave gaps in visibility. But businesses don’t need every interaction accounted for. They need enough reliable evidence to make confident decisions about where marketing investment should go next.

What the metrics don’t tell you
Clicks and impressions can tell you what happened. But they can’t always tell you what it was worth.
For that, you need to look beyond platform performance and bring in commercial measures such as:
Average deal size
Customer lifetime value
Booking-to-dine lead times
Cancellation rates
MQL-to-SQL conversion
Pipeline value
Closed revenue
These metrics show whether marketing is merely generating activity or creating genuine commercial value.
"Attribution is only one piece of the puzzle. AI is changing how customers discover brands across every sector, making ROI modelling increasingly important. Whether you're measuring average basket value, repeat purchases and customer lifetime value in B2C, or pipeline, average deal size and sales conversion in B2B, success comes from understanding how every marketing investment contributes to commercial growth."
– Will, Strategy Lead
The changing role of paid media
AI isn’t only changing search. It’s changing the job paid media is doing too.
Meta, Google Ads and LinkedIn are investing heavily in AI-powered campaign optimisation, audience targeting and creative generation. At the same time, customers are increasingly discovering brands through social content before continuing their research elsewhere, whether that’s through Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT or review platforms.

Paid campaigns can shape the decision before a conversion ever shows up in the data. A customer may first encounter an Instagram Reel or Facebook advert, then continue their research through AI-powered search. Days or weeks can pass before they finally convert through branded search or a direct visit.
Without connected attribution and ROI modelling, the channels creating demand may receive little credit for the role they played. Better measurement shows which channels shaped the decision, not just where the customer ended up.
"AI is making paid social more intelligent than ever, from audience targeting and campaign optimisation to creative testing. But it’s also changing how people buy. Instagram and Facebook are increasingly where customers discover brands, while AI Overviews, ChatGPT and traditional search help them decide what to do next. Measuring ROI across the full customer journey gives a much clearer sense of the role that paid social played in that decision."
– Matthew, Senior Campaign Manager
CRM is turning data into direction
AI is also giving businesses a more intelligent view of their customers. From predictive insights to automated segmentation and smarter customer journeys, CRM platforms are becoming far more sophisticated. That means marketers can spend less time pulling reports and more time acting on them.
"The real power of AI in CRM isn't automation, it's intelligence. By bringing together customer data, behavioural insights and predictive analytics, businesses can personalise every interaction and better understand which activities generate the greatest commercial return. CRM is being transformed from a reporting tool into a strategic driver of ROI."
– Emily, Strategy Lead

Connected measurement is the future
In the age of AI, the customer journey no longer follows a straightforward path. No one metric can explain it, and no single channel can account for the outcome.
Connecting marketing, CRM and revenue gives businesses a clearer understanding of what is driving growth. More importantly, it gives them a stronger basis for deciding where investment should go next.
